More on Chinatowns!
This time in LA.
Urban planner, James Rojas has put together an exciting exhibit and concept that invites participants to be engaged in re-imagining Chinatown using art and be an intimate part of the whole urban planning process. The exhibit will be hosted by Fifth Floor, an art/design gallery located within L.A.’s Chinatown, which will transform into a pop-up urban planning store with shelves lining the wall that will host an array of small, colorful buildings. Visitors can take these buildings off the shelves and place them on the model located in the middle of the gallery to create their ideal urban form. The model will constantly change as the work builds upon the contributions of others. I love the idea and intentionality of Rojas to help people think and dream about their community. Dude, you had me at hello.

Sessions and interviews now available through vimeo. 29 videos can be found there and if you are signed up you can also download them.
One of the highlights was listening to Dave Gibbons, John Park (Google), and Maxim (Yangdang) on Innovation Principles.
I love and appreciate what Charles Lee does. I’ve been blessed by the many projects that he and his community is engaged in. He’s coordinating The Idea Camp, a free hybrid conference for idea makers (Feb 27-28, 2009 at New Song Church, Irvine, CA) to share, network, and implement ideas. It will be a gathering of some of the most innovative and creative individuals from around the country.
And did I say free? Yes $0.00 thanks to some amazing sponsors.
Among the names presenting and/or facilitating conversations at The Idea Camp you should know or at least get to know: Greg Atkinson, Eric Bryant, Mike Foster (Ethur), Dave Gibbons (New Song), Jeff Shinabarger, Cynthia Ware (The Digital Sanctuary), Robert Yang of Kindlejoy.com, DJChuang, and more will be added between now and then, maybe even you.

Do you Ideate? Is that even a word? Anyways you should be here.
Perhaps we may not experience personally what it’s like to be homeless and sleep on cardboard but we can help their plight. This is a great creative solution called The Le Clochard Project by SZN a foundation which hopes to help young homeless people in the Netherlands. You can look like you’re homeless or incredibly fashionable with this duvet quilt cover and pillow case set. A large portion of the proceeds from the sale of this set funds housing projects which prioritize supporting young people in finding work or continuing their education.
The quilt cover comes in several sizes in a price range from about $73 to $117.
A set of two pillow cases costs about $22.
Recently BusinessWeek magazine released their list of the top 25 customer service champs.
According to the report, customer service declined this year. Good customer service builds loyalty and customers would recommend the company or product to their friends. They become evangelists. These companies demonstrate how an organization can bring together their human resources, management, processes and technology to benefit their customers.
How would a church rank? Or better yet, your church?
Afterall, a church should know something about service…right? I don’t mean to make the church sound like it’s providing some service but consider these questions,
• Do our churches help people navigate their journey with us or have a plan to help them?
• What do we do to make it easier for people to find what they need in our church or facilities?
Other than the distribution of information have we thought about wheelchair access, signage, clean bathrooms?
• What would it look like if a church was able to add more value to the people who come and to the people, businesses and organizations outside of it?
• What would it take for people to feel served?
Lenten Meditation
It was just before the Passover Feast. Jesus knew that the time had come for him to leave this world and go to the Father. Having loved his own who were in the world, he now showed them the full extent of his love.
The evening meal was being served, and the devil had already prompted Judas Iscariot, son of Simon, to betray Jesus. Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power, and that he had come from God and was returning to God; so he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist. After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him. – John 13

would anyone like to dream with me?
perhaps own a piece of beautiful america?
one of the places i’ve always wanted to visit was alaska. it’s just one of those places of pure beauty even at temperatures 60below. i definitely want to see the northern lights and climb mount mckinely. i thought this proposal that came out of a high school social studies class was a great exploration of how to boost a town’s dwindling population – give away one of the greatest natural resources that we can possibly have with the expectation to responsibly invest in that community. any entrepreneurs out there?

Highlights:
• Community of 300 offering 26 1.3-acre lots for free
• Lots go to first people to apply and pay $500 deposit beginning 9 a.m. Monday
• Winners must build 1,000-square-foot house within two years
• Idea for land lottery came from school project
oh my the possibilities…
